Golf Courses

Located in the prehistoric, tumbling sand dunes of central Wisconsin, Sand Valley offers three unique golf experiences modeled after the Heathland golf courses of London. With the first two courses by Coore & Crenshaw, the third course, Mammoth Dunes, designed by David McLay Kidd, and a fourth course (in construction) routed by Tom Doak, Sand Valley is a golf destination worth visiting.

Experience Golf at Sand Valley

Golf as it was meant to be is at the heart of Sand Valley. The resort is home to Sand Valley (Coore & Crenshaw, No. 15 on Golfweek’s 2023 Top 100 Resort Courses list) and Mammoth Dunes (David McLay Kidd, No. 16 on Golfweek’s 2023 Top 100 Resort Courses list), along with the 17-hole short course, the Sandbox and, opening in 2024, Tom Doak’s heathland-inspired Sedge Valley. Adjacent to the resort is The Lido, a private club, open to those staying at the resort Sunday to Thursday. Among the most captivating stories in the game, The Lido is a detailed recreation of C.B. Macdonald’s lost Long Island gem.

SAND VALLEY

Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw created a routing with massive and exposed sand dunes, firm and fast fairways, and a multitude of strategic playing options. Sand Valley is fun and playable, but can be set up to provide a serious challenge.

MAMMOTH DUNES

David McLay Kidd designed a journey around a majestic landscape, enormous fairways, big accessible greens, and visually-unique hillsides of exposed sand. Along the way, his design skews toward helping, which increases thrill and enjoyment.

SEDGE VALLEY

Sedge Valley, designed by Tom Doak and inspired by the great heathland and links courses of London and the English coast, brings back a more intimate scale and classically styled holes. Golfers will encounter the timeless strategies and elements of courses that Doak believes have best withstood the endless advances of the game.

THE LIDO

The Lido-C.B. Macdonald’s long-lost gem – recently restored at Sand Valley by Tom Doak and Renaissance Golf, opened to its members and guests this summer. It was considered by golf historians as one of the greatest golf courses ever created and after it was repurposed to the US Navy during WWII, it has intrigued many as one of the great lost wonders of the golf world. Today, golfers can participate in the Lido’s resurrection and will be captivated by its demand for strategy and bold design.

We are honored to announce Sand Valley Resort and The Lido have been chosen by the USGA as the host site for four USGA championships, beginning with the U.S. Mid-Amateur in 2026.

THE SANDBOX

Designed by Coore & Crenshaw, The Sandbox plays through a restored sand prairie that sits within the same V-shaped sand ridge that frames Mammoth Dunes. The short course features the most unique green complexes on the property, including a Biarritz, double plateau, lion’s mouth, and a redan.

Course Conditions

Firm and Fast

The golf courses at Sand Valley feature fescue grass in our fairways and "rough" hazards and bent grass on our greens. These are types of grass that provide firm and fast playing conditions that mimic the playing conditions at links courses in Scotland and Ireland, where the game began.

Brown is Beautiful

At Sand Valley, you will find tawny brown/green fairways and greens as a reflection of our firm and fast conditions. We believe the faded green turf on our golf courses presents the most enjoyable form of links golf.

What Does this Mean for You?

While every player chooses to play differently, playing on firm and fast playing conditions generally forces the player to use the “ground game” (putters from off the green, bump and runs with a lower iron, etc.) to his or her advantage instead of trying to use lofted wedges to try to control the ball through loft and spin. The firmer playing conditions mean your ball will generally roll out much farther than you might be used to and that it can be harder to pick the ball clean from the fairway.

A Quick Tip: Links Golf 101

When in doubt from just off the green, when choosing between a lofted wedge and a putter, go with the putter!
